I love steampunk. I come from a family of artists who played with steampunk over several decades. Sculpey is an ideal material to use with steampunk, because you can age it and texturize it so well and the matte surface allows the glow of the metals you combine with it to really shine. Tim Holtz has a lot of metal bits that combine well with Sculpey to create your steampunked collages. While Tim offers some larger metal gears than we can find in watches, they ARE metal and can be difficult to combine and “sandwich” with other items to create your collage. My solution? Make the gears out of Sculpey! Really all you need are some smaller circle cutters and a star cutter. You can create a piece entirely out of clay gears or just use one to help “sandwich” into a collage setting. This piece features Tim’s metal piece with a gold Sculpey background and then a silver Sculpey gear at the top.
I have complete instructions for making gears on the Sculpey website here: http://www.sculpey.com/projects/steampunk-gear-necklace
